Damping Coatings for Automotive and Appliances: Panel Vibration Noise and Weight

Car body panels, air-conditioner outdoor-unit casings, refrigerator compressor support plates and washing machine side panels often share one noise source: thin panels that are excited, vibrate and radiate sound. A water-based damping material (sound deadening / anti-drumming compound) applied to these panels is used to suppress that vibration noise, while weight, adhesion and the production process must also fit. AN2-800 and the AN2-L series suit these parts; where sound absorption, insulation and weight must be balanced, ANL-800TC can be evaluated. Overseas customers can request a quote directly.

Typical parts and noise problems

PartTypical problemWhat damping addressesWhat needs other measures
Car body panels (floor, wheel arches, doors)Road and powertrain excitation makes panels vibrate and produce structure-borne noiseVibration radiated by the panelsSound entering through gaps and the air needs sealing, insulation and absorption

Application and use

Please provide before selection

Part structure and sheet thickness, weight target (allowed added weight), primer system, drying conditions on the line, test requirements, and annual volume or batch plan.

Trial evaluation

  1. Operating conditions: part drawing or photo, sheet thickness, primer, noise problem.
  2. Process conditions: application method on the line (manual or automated spraying), drying temperature and time.
  3. Candidate materials: our technical team proposes candidate grades with current data.
  4. Test panel comparison: prepare test panels with the same substrate, thickness and drying conditions as in production and compare before/after under the same test conditions.

Application notes

  • Substrates: steel with anti-corrosion primer, galvanised steel, anodised aluminium and similar; verify compatibility before use; remove oil and dust.
  • Film build and drying (AN2-800 / ANL-800TC): up to 5 mm wet film in one pass, approx. 4–4.5 mm when dry; application temperature of at least 15 °C is recommended; at 20 °C, 55% RH and approx. 5 mm dry film, full drying takes 12–18 hours, at 50 °C approx. 2–4 hours (surface air speed below 5 m/s).
  • Equipment cleaning: after applying water-based materials, pumps, lines and spray systems can be cleaned with Cleaner E01; confirm compatibility with the residue and the equipment materials first.

FAQ

  • Can a damping coating solve vibration noise of appliance casings and panels?

First confirm the transmission path. If the noise mainly comes from casings and panels vibrating and radiating sound, that is the part a damping material addresses. Noise of the compressor or fan themselves, and factors such as load and installation, need other measures. Compare test panels before and after coating under the same test conditions.

  • Which product suits weight-sensitive parts?

The AN2-L series on our website is a lightweight damping material in the grades AN2-L806 / L808 / L810, selected by substrate, weight and performance target; data follow the confirmed documents of the selected grade. Where sound absorption, insulation and weight must be balanced, ANL-800TC lightweight absorbing and insulating coating can be evaluated; its wet density is approx. 0.80 g/cm³ (TDS v.250330).

  • What is the difference between a damping coating and a sound absorbing or insulating coating?

A damping coating suppresses panel vibration and addresses the noise radiated by the vibrating panel. Absorbing and insulating materials deal with sound travelling through the air. They act on different paths and cannot replace each other; a part may need both.

  • Is there technical data for LASD 4147?

Only the LASD 4147 model is listed on our website at present; no data are published. For the current technical data of this grade, contact Tech@griwecolor.com.cn.

  • Can it be used on an automated spray line?

This has to be assessed for the line. Tell us the spraying method, drying temperature and time, cycle time and film thickness requirements; our technical team will assess them against the current data of the candidate grades, and test panels made under production conditions confirm the result.

  • Can I buy directly from outside China?

Yes. Overseas customers can request a quote directly from us. Tell us the part type, sheet thickness, target thickness and expected volume, and our sales team will reply with pricing and lead time.
