Water-based damping coatings on steel industrial platforms: an application note
Steel industrial platforms often face equipment noise, vibration transmission and corrosion at the same time. A water-based damping coating is one option for reducing vibration and noise; its protective effect must be confirmed against the working conditions and test results.
Problems on the platform
Industrial environments are harsh, and long use brings wear and corrosion. Running equipment makes noise, vibration travels into the platform structure, and it may even cause structural fatigue.
What the coating can do
It absorbs and spreads vibration energy and lowers noise transmission; the protective film isolates the steel from air and moisture, which helps against corrosion; and a flame-retardant film slows the spread of fire. The actual protection, fire or flame-retardant behaviour follows the applicable standard and test reports.
Typical places
Steel platforms in factory workshops and storage facilities. Storage platforms carry a lot of goods and machinery, so corrosion and vibration deserve extra attention.
How to choose
First separate whether the sound comes from equipment excitation, connection transmission or panel response, then settle the coating area, substrate conditions and acceptance method. See also the steel platform page on this site.
