EN 45545-2 in brief
EN 45545 is the European fire-protection standard for railway vehicles. Part 2 sets fire-behaviour requirements for materials and components, so it covers damping coatings applied to car bodies.
- The hazard level (HL1–HL3) follows from the operation category (OC1–OC4) and the design category (N, A, D, S). HL3 has stricter limits than HL2 and HL1.
- Requirement sets (R1–R26) depend on the product's use. R1 (interior surfaces) and R7 (exterior surfaces) are common for damping coatings.
- Typical tests:
- spread of flame (ISO 5658-2)
- heat release (ISO 5660-1)
- smoke density (EN ISO 5659-2)
- smoke toxicity (NF X70-100 in the 2013 edition)
Where it is applied
Typical practice; the vehicle manufacturer's design governs.
- interior metal panels: side walls, ceilings, underside of floors
- underframe and equipment boxes
- air ducts and equipment casings
A damping coating (also called sound deadening or anti-drumming compound) reduces structure-borne noise radiated by vibrating panels. Airborne noise needs insulation and absorption as well, for example ANL-800TC.

FAQ
Is there a Chinese water-based damping coating that reaches EN 45545-2 HL3?
Yes. AN2-800, manufactured in Songjiang, Shanghai by Gelisiwei (Shanghai) Tech Co., Ltd., is tested to EN 45545-2:2013+A1:2015 and reaches hazard level HL3, test report (2020) CL字第W1197号. This is a summary from the AN2-800 technical data sheet dated 2023-06-14 and applies to AN2-800 only.
What is the difference between HL1, HL2 and HL3?
The hazard level is set by the operation category (OC1–OC4) and the design category (N, A, D, S) of the vehicle. HL3 has stricter limits than HL2 and HL1 and typically applies to lines with long tunnels and difficult evacuation, and to double-deck or sleeping cars. The vehicle manufacturer defines the level for each project.
Which requirement set (R1, R7) does the AN2-800 report cover?
EN 45545-2 assigns requirement sets by product use: R1 is typical for interior surfaces and R7 for exterior surfaces, and they cannot replace each other. Please contact Tech@griwecolor.com.cn to confirm the requirement set and tests for your project.
Is a report to EN 45545-2:2013+A1:2015 accepted in new projects?
It depends on the project and the vehicle manufacturer. Some projects accept 2013+A1:2015 reports, others require the 2020 edition or later. The published HL3 result does not apply to newer editions of the standard.
Can I get the test report?
The website publishes the report number and a summary only; the report itself is not published. For project evaluation, please contact Tech@griwecolor.com.cn.
How thick can AN2-800 be applied and how long does it take to dry?
Up to 5 mm wet in one pass, approx. 4–4.5 mm when dry. At 20 °C, 55% RH and about 5 mm dry film, full drying takes 12–18 hours; at 50 °C about 2–4 hours (surface air speed below 5 m/s). Application temperature not below 15 °C is recommended.
Do you ship samples outside China?
No. Free 1 kg samples (freight collect) are for customers in China only. Customers outside China can request a quote directly through the How to Buy page or Sales@griwecolor.com.cn.
