Damping Coatings for Buildings and Elevators: Elevator Cars, Metal Roof Rain Noise and Duct Vibration

Elevator car walls, roofs and floors, metal roofs and HVAC ducts or machine enclosures often have one noise source in common: metal panels that are excited, vibrate and radiate sound. A water-based damping coating (sound deadening / anti-drumming compound) sprayed onto these panels is used to suppress that vibration noise. Gelisiwei (Shanghai) Tech Co., Ltd., working with German technology, offers AN6-S130 and AN2-800 for these applications. Overseas customers can request a quote directly.

Which part of the noise a damping coating addresses

ApplicationTypical problemWhat damping addressesWhat needs other measures
Elevator carsCar walls, roof and floor panels vibrate during travel and radiate noise into the carVibration radiated by the car's metal panelsAirflow in the shaft and sound from the traction machine reaching the car through the air need insulation, absorption or mechanical measures
Metal roofsRaindrops hit the metal roof and the roof sheet vibrates and radiates soundVibration of the roof sheet under rain impactLoose fixings, poor drainage and other construction issues should be fixed first
HVAC ducts, machine enclosuresFans, compressors and other equipment make duct walls and enclosure panels vibrateVibration radiated by duct walls and enclosure panelsAirflow noise of the equipment itself and noise at the outlets need other measures

First determine where the noise comes from, how it is transmitted and how the panel responds, then decide where to apply the coating. This is a qualitative description and does not represent validated results.

Application notes (AN6-S130 / AN2-800)

  • Substrate: clean and free of oil; test compatibility with different primers and metal surfaces.
  • Film build: up to 5 mm wet film in one pass, approx. 4–4.5 mm when dry.
  • Temperature and drying: application temperature of at least 15 °C is recommended; at 20 °C, 55% RH and approx. 5 mm dry film, full drying takes 12–18 hours; at 50 °C approx. 2–4 hours (surface air speed below 5 m/s).
  • Roofs and ducts: avoid standing water in design and application, and keep ventilation available for drying.
  • Estimating consumption: consumption is roughly proportional to dry-film thickness; multiply the "per 1 mm dry film" value in the table by the target dry-film thickness and the area. The target thickness depends on the application.

Elevator projects: compare like for like

Tell us the car type, running direction and measurement point requirements. Before/after data are only comparable when taken on the same elevator, at the same measurement point, in the same running direction (up and down separately) and with the same load. The elevator car historical record on our website is a record of on-site data collection; it provides no values, construction or method and is not a validated project result.

FAQ

  • Does a damping coating help with a noisy elevator car?

It depends on the noise source. If the noise mainly comes from car wall, roof and floor panels vibrating and radiating into the car, that is the part a damping coating addresses. Airflow in the shaft and sound from the traction machine reaching the car through the air need insulation, absorption or mechanical measures. Compare before/after data on the same elevator, at the same measurement point, in the same running direction and with the same load.

  • Which product is suitable for rain noise on a metal roof?

The typical uses of AN6-S130, our damping coating for buildings and equipment, include rain impact noise on metal roofs. Its composite loss factor is 0.15 (with reference to DIN EN ISO 6721-3) and consumption is approx. 1.2–1.4 kg/m² (wet) per 1 mm dry film, according to TDS v260112. Avoid standing water and keep ventilation available for drying. The thickness depends on the roof structure and trials on test panels.

  • How do I choose between AN6-S130 and AN2-800?

Both are used to control vibration noise of metal panels. Our website lists metal roofs, HVAC ducts, steel structures and machine enclosures as typical uses of AN6-S130. AN2-800 is listed for rail vehicles, elevators, ventilation ducts and equipment casings, and metal components in cars and ships; its composite loss factor is 0.2 (with reference to DIN EN ISO 6721-3). Send us the substrate, sheet thickness, noise problem and application conditions and our technical team will help you select.

  • Is there technical data for AN2-800EL, the elevator grade?

Only the AN2-800EL model is listed on our website at present; no data are published. For the current technical data of this grade, contact Tech@griwecolor.com.cn.

  • How do I estimate consumption?

Consumption is roughly proportional to dry-film thickness. According to our product data, AN6-S130 needs approx. 1.2–1.4 kg/m² (wet) per 1 mm dry film and AN2-800 approx. 1.4–1.8 kg/m². Multiply this value by the target dry-film thickness and the area. The target thickness depends on the application.

  • What are the application conditions?

An application temperature of at least 15 °C is recommended. One pass gives up to 5 mm wet film, approx. 4–4.5 mm when dry. At 20 °C, 55% RH and approx. 5 mm dry film, full drying takes 12–18 hours; at 50 °C approx. 2–4 hours (surface air speed below 5 m/s). The substrate must be clean and free of oil; test compatibility with different primers and metal surfaces first.

  • Can I buy directly from outside China?

Yes. Overseas customers can request a quote directly from us. Tell us the application, the substrate, the area and the target thickness, and our sales team will reply with pricing and lead time.
