Drying requirements of water-based damping coatings and what affects them
Drying is not just a matter of waiting: thickness, temperature, humidity and ventilation together set the drying time of a water-based damping coating and also affect the quality of the final film.
Drying time
Drying time depends on film thickness, ambient temperature, humidity and ventilation. It is generally fairly short, usually between a few hours and a day, but the exact time follows the coating's technical instructions and the site conditions. Under-drying and over-drying both lower film quality.
Temperature and humidity
Higher temperature speeds drying and shortens the time, but too high a temperature dries the surface first while the inside stays wet, which can cause cracks or coating failure. High relative humidity lengthens drying; ventilation and moisture removal help.
Ventilation
Enough fresh air and the removal of volatile components speed drying. Keep the work area well ventilated, and avoid strong draughts or sudden weather changes that disturb drying.
Site checklist
Follow the supplier's technical instructions and application guide; clean, repair and sand the surface before work; monitor temperature and humidity during work; keep ventilation up; check drying regularly and confirm full dryness before the next step.
