Ageing evaluation of water-based damping coatings
Ageing tests check whether a coating keeps its adhesion, flexibility and appearance in long service. The usual four are damp heat, hot–cold shock, salt spray and ultraviolet, and each answers a different question.
Damp-heat ageing
Assesses durability in a hot, humid environment; the questions are whether the film delaminates, cracks or changes colour.
Hot–cold shock
Assesses behaviour under extreme temperature swings; the questions are whether adhesion and flexibility hold and whether the film cracks, flakes or deforms.
Salt spray and ultraviolet
Salt spray tests corrosion resistance and looks for delamination, flaking or rust; it relates to marine or high-humidity environments. Ultraviolet tests resistance to UV light and looks for fading, chalking or crazing; it relates to long outdoor use.
How to quote a result
Test method, duration, substrate and acceptance criteria differ, so results cannot stand in for one another. If you need an ageing result for a specific model, ask us for the matching test report and tell us the service environment.
